Psychotherapy couch
Why go to a therapist?

People go to therapy for many different reasons. At times people seek therapy for a specific, defined issue or problem (e.g. substance abuse, addiction, depression, anxiety, relationship difficulties, etc.) At other times people seek therapy merely for additional life support. It is a misconception that therapy is only for the treatment of problems or for the sick and suffering. Therapy is also for the person that is doing and feeling great, but wants to work with someone in order to optimize their potential even further. Additionally, therapy is "preventive". Much like an annual visit to a PCP for a physical or your dentist for a routine check-up, therapy is effectively utilized

What makes therapy successful?

Successful therapy is characterized by trust. It is a collaborative partnership between therapist and client. The therapist does not "fix" the client. Rather, both therapist and client work together to identify problems and goals.  The client is an active participant in his or her therapy, not a passive bystander or spectator of the process. The therapy does not "come to you."  A client's role is to  take responsibility for change, recognizing their influence in the circumstances of their life and being ready to work for change. Therapy sessions typically last 50 minutes in duration and occur on a weekly basis. However, the duration and frequency of appointments may be longer or more often depending on the nature of the presenting concerns.

Is therapy confidential?

Yes. All communications in therapy and even your attendance in therapy are confidential. There are some exceptions.

  • Suspicion of abuse toward children, dependent adults and the elderly.

  • Threats of bodily harm towards oneself or others.
